About us and ours - and life at the farm

"We" are an extraordinary ordinary family from the Danish mainland. We live at a little farm ( very ironicly called "the estate") which we share with 2 dogs, 10 cats ( last time we counted) and untill a few months ago, we also had a couple of guineapigs. With a little good will and a whole lot of fantacy, our little farm might very well be classified as an estate - we do have it all in miniature; a long driveway, fountain in the yard, pictures of our ancestors on the wall and a huge garden ("parklike" according to the estate agent who sold us the farm"). We do have a little land too - with crops grown the organic way. But we donīt have any ghosts.....as far as we know.

We humans counts five: Jens ( husband and agricultural consultant), Anne-Marie ( wife and educator) and Christian, Henrik and Philip ( all still in school). We live as close as it gets to a normal life, where we have to combine worklife, different interests, meetings at school/work and homelife to a whole unit. The puzzle almost always gathers to a whole picture, when we just work together in placing the pieces in their right place.  Sometimes, when times are real busy, we sweat rivers and get red cheaks by the mere thought of all the things we have to fit in - sometimes we have to choose, and sometimes there are activities time donīt allow us to do.  Thatīs life - so full of oppotunities to learn and experience.

The organic way of life donīt show too much in our everyday life; we grow the fields organicly, we try to choose organic grogeries and ofcause we donīt use poison in the garden ( althougt it is sometimes very tempting). Itīs the "no poison in the garden" part we feel most - the weeds has a nasty habit of growing ekstraordinary fast here (or so it seems) and the hoe has more to do here than in many other gardens we know. We do, however, feel real good when we eat the fruits and vegetables grown here, and we are convinced, that the organic way of life will benefit both our health and the eviroment in the long run.

A fairly big part of our life is filled with homelife and our animals. Homelife because thatīs where we get our strength and where we reload our batteries - and the animals because they constribute to make our every day life more interesting and challengeing. Alltogether those two factors make a good and solid foundation for the whole family, and we know, that when the world around us is a difficult dancepartner, we can always find a quiet moment to think things over here at home.

And the animals - yes, they do deserve a whole chapter of their own.  We have, as before mentioned, many different spieces who each constribute to our family with different characteristics and forces. Take for instance our two danish farmdogs - they are called ( but not always obeying) the names Fie and Freja. Both of them have an unbelieveable energy and willingness to learn - when they think the tasks are relevant and thereīs enough goodies in sight.

Fie is the smallest and most energic. She was born with just a small tail but that donīt seem to bother her at all. The tail she do have, small as it may be, work perfectly for the purpose The Lord created tails  - to wag with when happy (sheīs always happy) and to communicate with the world around her. Fie is somewhat of an oppotonist - eat anything avaible and donīt mind exploring the world over kicthentable hight - or the world outside our little piece of land as such. She love to "talk" to anyone - so she will never be a watchdog.  She do have the ability of jumping amazingly high, itīs almost like she flies through the air - a tallent that would do perfectly for agility. However, we humans donīt have nearly as much tallent or interest for this sport, so Fie have to do with jumping over the fence to her and Frejas "room" in the stable, which she happily do ever so often when she can. Fie is convinced, that it has got to be a mistake whenever we leave her in there - so she has made it her challenge in life to breake out.

Freja is the calm one. Sheīs not as energic as Fie and her favourite activity is to stay with us humans - preferably in the softest funiture and with a blanket to snooze in - if we would allow it. We wonīt. However, she never loose hope that the dog eye effect will work eventually, and sheīs not afraid of useing it either!! But otherwise sheīs an easy learner as well - as long as we can convince her that the things we would like her to be able to do, is relevant. Goodies has an effect, especially when they are a part of her daily food and she has to work to eat.  And it is obvious that she donīt always obey willingly. It is as if she say: "ok, if I must I will do it.....are you sure you really wanīt me to stay ( big sigh).......now I stay........donīt be so unpatient.....ok. ok, I will do it"  - and only then she will obey.  Freja is a bit reserved, she hide away when she sence trouble - and so she will never be a good watchdog either. But she has bonded with us humans and likes to be where her "pack" is - the same goes for Fie, by the way.

When we first started this homepage we only had those two dogs - but somehow 6 dogs have found their way to our farm now: Fie and Freja was first ofcause.  Their funktion is now to take care of the farm and keep mice and rats away - and they do that perfectly. Then Fie got a puppy which we keept.....and then came the pugs....oh dear! The pugs....well yes.....they were supposed to work together with us as mothers to a whole lot of puppies. However, they seem to have their own oppinion in the matter, and so we havenīt managed to get one sincle litter of pugpuppies yet. All they do is bullying our little farmdog, Kvik, and acting as good companions for everyone in the family......thatīt what the breed were really raised for, and what they are very good at. We love all our dogs very, very much. They are a part of our family and we enjoy their company.

All in all we are a family who try to live peacefully with our neighbours and the world around us. We donīt concider ourself as very much different from other families........and then again....maybe we are a little bit more friendly than other families. Spiders are welcome inside - they eat the flies. Dust are.....maybe not that welcome, but we donīt use a whole lot of time fighting it. And then there are the ants. THEY are not very welcome inside the house. But they are very welcome to find a big stone in the garden, under which they can live. You have to admire the antqueen and the presistency she shows. First she send a few scouts inside to locate the good places and if they are not caught, she send the whole rest of her "family" to the promished land. They are NOT welcome inside....and we will fight their invation with every sincle "weapon" we know. Diplomacy donīt seem to work  - it alway seem to take a few dead ants before the queen understands the message.

Well, this was about all there is to telll about us and ours. Not very much and not very original but just enough to give an overall picture of our little crazy family:-))
